Quail Botanical Gardens Branches Out With Public Art Exhibit Collaborating with San Diego Fine Art Society
September 4, 2008 (San Diego, CA)…The San Diego Fine Arts Society and Quail Botanical Gardens have joined forces to create a larger-than-life experience for visitors. Hoping to delight and inspire, 16 sculptures by 14 local artists have been installed throughout the exotic plants and foliage of the 30-acre Quail Botanical Gardens in Encinitas, Calif.

At the entrance to the South African garden is a courageous lion, “The Lion of Flanders”, by Ilona J. Passino. Crafted of hand-cut, tumbled marble and emblazoned with a mosaic of stained glass, the lion boldly looks out across the pathway, spying a bronze giraffe, by Dave Ghilarducci.
An 8½-foot tall woman stands in another part of the Gardens; “Sophia” represents Mother Earth in human form. Created by Carolyn Guerra and Kathryn Weiss, her front depicts the beauty of sunshine, brightly colored flowers and the warms of daylight. Her back represents the misuse of the planet, with a mosaic that shows night and darkness.
“The original concept (of “Sophia”) was derived from the inspiration of recycling,” said Artist Carolyn Guerra, who collaborated with Artist Kathryn Weiss. “In an effort to promote recycling, the base of the sculpture is a discarded automobile tire rim; the supports of the arms are bicycle tire rims and the backside and bust are used tennis balls.”
The natural elements used to create these original artworks blend beautifully with the natural beauty of the Gardens.
Other pieces include: • “Tree Beneath The Sea” by James Stone – a mix of hot glass, steel and tile representing the look and feel of life beneath the ocean surface • “The Voyage” by Terry Kuntz – a redwood statue on a stone base with a nautical feel, appearing windswept among the blowing foliage backdrop • “Wind Dancer” by Charles Bronson – copper with blue patina and blue ice base • “Giant Fairy Tale Bunny” by Carl Glowienke – made of bronze • “Osprey” by Maria De Castro – made of clay, glass, metal, wood & acrylic paint giving whimsical character and personality to this large bird creature • “Freewill” by Carolyn Guerra – concrete covered with glass and mosaic tiles representing the dichotomy of good and evil, temptation • “I Am Woman” by Carolyn Guerra – made of reinforced forton and recycled materials and covered in glass and tile mosaic, this piece inspires us to recycle and conserve • “Kelp Man” by DJ Brelje – made of steel show a figure that seems to be rising out of the foliage, connected to it • “A Triflow of Truth” by Lia Strell – a 12-foot steel sculpture with metallic copper finish • “Century” and “Ocotillo” by Benjamin Lavender – steel sculptures depicting plant life • “Ascent” by Fred Briscoe – a 6-foot redwood sculpture on a bronze pedestal with an almost leaf-life design, mimicking the unique shapes found in nature • “Ascend” by Joey Vaiasuso – a bronze sculpture with an organic geometric form • “Steeples” by Christine Beniston – a collection of stacked, vibrant ceramic totems
The sculptures will be on display at Quail Botanical Gardens until the end of October. Visitors are welcomed from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM daily. Admission is $10 for adults, $7 for seniors, students and active military, $5 for children ages 3-12 and free to children ages 2 and younger and Members of the Gardens.
